OWA v6 and v7 coexistence

Introduction

During a phased rollout of the Zivver OWA add-in v7, both the v6 and v7 add-ins can be present in the same mailbox at the same time. This setup is called the coexistence setup. It allows you to test v7 with a selected pilot group while the rest of your organization continues using v6.

This page describes how to enable or disable the v6 and v7 add-ins when both are installed, and explains the behavior users can expect.

Warning
The coexistence setup is intended as a temporary testing phase. Once the pilot is completed, remove the coexistence add-in before rolling out the standard v6-to-v7 update to all users. See Upgrade to Zivver OWA add-in v7 for the full update process.

How coexistence works

When both add-ins are present in a mailbox:

  • OWA v7 is active by default. After Outlook is refreshed or restarted following deployment, v7 becomes the active add-in and v6 becomes inactive.
  • The active version is browser-specific, not account-specific. If a user opens Outlook in a different browser, v7 will be active by default in that browser as well.
  • If a user switches between multiple Outlook accounts in the same browser, the active add-in version applies to all accounts in that browser session.
Info
It may be necessary to turn off Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection in order to switch between v6 and v7.

Installing the v7 coexistence add-in

The v7 coexistence add-in is not deployed automatically. Install it manually from the Microsoft 365 admin center for the users who take part in the pilot.

  1. Log in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  2. Click Add-ins to open the advanced add-in management.
  3. Click Deploy Add-In.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select Upload custom apps and then I have a URL for the manifest file.
  6. Enter https://owa-v7.zivver.com/beta/manifest.xml as the URL of the OWA add-in manifest file.
    Note
Make sure to include https://, even though this is already indicated in the user interface.
  7. Select Specific users/groups and assign the add-in to the pilot users or groups.
    Warning
Do not assign the coexistence add-in to your entire organization. Only the users or groups that take part in the pilot should receive it.
  8. Click .
Info

After deployment from the Microsoft Admin Center, Microsoft may take up to 72 hours to provision the v7 add-in to user mailboxes:

  • This provisioning process is controlled entirely by Microsoft.
  • Zivver has no control over the synchronization timing.
  • Different users may receive the add-in at different times.

Once the add-in becomes available in the mailbox, v7 is the active add-in by default, as described above. Users can switch back to v6 themselves at any time, for example when v7 blocks a workflow or when Zivver Support asks them to switch for testing purposes. See Switching between OWA v6 and OWA v7.

How users notice that OWA v7 has been deployed

In Outlook on the web

  • Users will not receive a notification that the new add-in was deployed.
  • The add-in v7 will not appear or interfere with emails until the Outlook page is refreshed.

In the new Outlook

  • The add-in may become visible in the ribbon before it is fully active.
  • The add-in will not function until the application is restarted for the first time after deployment.

Switching between OWA v6 and OWA v7

In Outlook on the web

To enable OWA v6:

  1. Open a new browser tab.
  2. Navigate to: https://owa-v6.zivver.com/enable
  3. A confirmation message appears: “Zivver add-in for OWA (v6) is now active. Zivver add-in for OWA (v7) will serve a pass-through page.”
  4. Refresh the Outlook page.

To enable OWA v7:

  1. Open a new browser tab.
  2. Navigate to: https://owa-v7.zivver.com/enable
  3. A confirmation message appears: “Zivver add-in for OWA (v7) is now active. Zivver add-in for OWA (v6) will serve a pass-through page.”
  4. Refresh the Outlook page.

In the new Outlook

To enable OWA v6:

  1. Open the OWA v6 task pane.
  2. Click the link https://owa-v6.zivver.com/enable.
  3. A confirmation message appears: “Zivver add-in for OWA (v6) is now active. Zivver add-in for OWA (v7) will serve a pass-through page.”
  4. Close and reopen the task pane.

To enable OWA v7:

  1. Open the OWA v7 task pane.
  2. Click the link https://owa-v7.zivver.com/enable.
  3. A confirmation message appears: “Zivver add-in for OWA (v7) is now active. Zivver add-in for OWA (v6) will serve a pass-through page.”
  4. Close and reopen the task pane.

First-time login with OWA v7

Users must log in to Zivver the first time they use the OWA v7 add-in. If a user attempts to send an email before logging in, the add-in will prompt them to log in during the sending process.

Ending the pilot

Once testing is completed, follow these steps before proceeding with the full migration:

  1. Instruct pilot users to switch back to v6 (see Switching between OWA v6 and OWA v7).
Note
If a pilot user forgets, or chooses not, to switch back to OWA v6, removing the v7 coexistence add-in in the next step will not reactivate OWA v6 automatically. That user will have no Zivver protection until step 4, when the standard update to OWA v7 is applied.
  1. Remove the v7 coexistence add-in from pilot user mailboxes in the Microsoft Admin Center.
  2. Wait for the removal to complete. The add-in is removed from the mailbox after Outlook is refreshed or the new Outlook application is restarted.
  3. Proceed with the standard update from v6 to v7. See Upgrade to Zivver OWA add-in v7.
