Disable the Zivver OWA Add-in in Outlook

Introduction

This document describes how to disable the Zivver OWA add-in in Outlook when your organization uses both the Zivver OWA add-in and the Zivver Office plugin.

The Zivver OWA add-in is by default available in Outlook because it is installed in Exchange Online. Having the OWA add-in in Outlook can be confusing for users, so Zivver recommends to disable the OWA add-in button in the Outlook ribbon.

Requirements

  • The Zivver OWA Add-in is installed
  • The Zivver Office plugin is installed
  • Outlook for Windows (version 2102 or later / build: 16.0.13801.XXXXX (or later))

Disable the Zivver OWA add-in

There are two methods to disable the Zivver OWA add-in in Outlook:

  1. For one user through Local Security Policy
  2. For multiple users through Domain Group Policy

Disable the OWA add-in via Local Security Policy for one user

  1. Download the latest Administrative Templates tool from Microsoft.
    Choose the 32-bit installer for 32-bit Outlook, choose the 64-bit installer for 64-bit Outlook. How do I check the bitness of Office?
  2. Use the installer to extract the files to a temporary folder.
    For example C:\Temp\
  3. Go to the temporary folder and copy the file outlk16.admx to %windir%\Policydefinitions.
  4. From the correct language folder in the temporary folder, copy the outlk16.adml file to corresponding folder in %windir%\Policydefinitions\en-us.
    For English: en-us
    For Dutch: nl-nl
  5. Open the Local Security Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
  6. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Outlook 2016 > Miscellaneous.
  7. Open the setting Deactivate Outlook web add-ins whose equivalent COM or VSTO add-in is installed.
  8. Set the value name as 0df8bc4d-cef5-40ac-8ef5-930b8350ec9a and the Value as ZivverOfficePlugin.AddinModule
  9. Click OK to save the settings.
  10. Restart Outlook to enable the change.

Disable the OWA add-in via Domain Group Policy for multiple users

  1. Download the latest Administrative Templates tool from Microsoft.
    Choose the 32-bit installer for 32-bit Outlook, choose the 64-bit installer for 64-bit Outlook. How do I check the bitness of Office?
  2. Use the installer to extract the files to a temporary folder.
    For example C:\Temp\
  3. Install the outlk16.admx file and outlk16.adml file (from the corresponding language folder) in the Policy Object Store.

  4. Open the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
  5. Create a new user policy or edit an existing user policy.
  6. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Outlook 2016 > Miscellaneous.
  7. Open the setting Deactivate Outlook web add-ins whose equivalent COM or VSTO add-in is installed.
  8. Set the Name as ZivverOfficePlugin.AddinModule and the Value as 0df8bc4d-cef5-40ac-8ef5-930b8350ec9a
  9. Save the policy.
  10. Deploy the policy to the Zivver Office plugin users.
    After a gpupdate the policy will come in effect and after a restart of Outlook the button should be removed.

How do I know it worked?

The Zivver OWA add-in button is normally visible under Home in the Outlook ribbon and should say Read securely with Zivver (see image with subtitle Zivver Group. If this button is not visible, the change was successfully applied.

If for some reason the button is still visible, please check if you used the correct bit version in step 1.
